Skinny Bitch Author Rory Freedman speaks..Going Vegan may be for you
" Skinny Bitch co-author and great mentor.. Rory Freedman gives you five good reasons to go vegan. "
I got this from a great Youtube channel called Animal Aid.. Vegan isn't for everybody..but it might be for you. I learned a lot from this clip. I am not vegan, I eat meat. I struggle with the notion that I am not being as kind to the creatures(animals) I so proudly protect, rescue and rehabilitate. No, I don't eat dog or cat or goldfish.. but I do eat beef, chicken and lamb. I tell myself that if I buy organic, free-range and kosher, or halal meat, that it's OK. But is it really? I recently saw an Oprah episode that focused on humane pig farming and the dreaded confinement farming. Not a big pork eater(Jewish guilt perhaps), but it got me thinking. For generations we(humans) have deluded ourselves into thinking that non-humans don't have the ability to feel, reason and communicate. We have reduced our livestock to breathing items that magically appear in neat plastic wrap, priced and ready to go. I think it's important to remember that as stewards of this planet, it is our responsibility to protect all creatures..yes..even if we have to eat them. Even going back to all faith traditions, appreciating the sacrifice of the animal was a very important aspect we took seriously. We've all seen the photo of the over-exposed Sarah Palin, slumped over a thousand pound moose, bloody and twisted(the moose, not Sarah) and with one of her small children near by. I wonder.. how in the world do you explain to a 7 year old that you've just gotten a thrill from sharp-shooting an animal? There seems to be a call to young women everywhere to join the hunting force..even on my beloved Facebook !!!! These are just some things I think about. There are no easy answers, ask Joe the plumber.- Ilan Kwittken
